Genshin pity system FAQ
Twelve short answers about the wish system, from soft pity start points to fate-point carryover - each backed by the documented rates on our methodology page.
What is pity in Genshin Impact?
Pity is the hidden counter that makes 5★s inevitable. Every wish that doesn’t produce a 5★ increases your per-wish odds on that banner type; the counter persists between banners of the same type, so wishes are never “wasted” - they just move you closer.
When does soft pity start?
Around wish 74 on the character and standard banners: the 5★ rate jumps from 0.6% to roughly 6.6% and climbs about 6 percentage points per wish. On the weapon banner it starts near wish 63 and climbs ~7 points per wish. Most 5★s actually arrive in this soft window, long before hard pity.
Does pity carry over between banners?
Yes, between banners of the same type: your counter and guarantee status carry from one character event banner to the next, weapon to weapon, and the standard banner keeps its own separate counter. Weapon-banner fate points persist between weapon banners too. Nothing carries between different banner types - character pity never helps on the weapon banner.
What is hard pity?
The guaranteed-5★ point: wish 90 on character/standard banners, wish 80 on the weapon banner. If the rate ramp somehow never fired, the 90th (or 80th) wish is a 5★ with certainty.
What happens if I lose the 50/50?
You get a standard-pool 5★ character instead of the featured one - but your next 5★ on that banner type is guaranteed to be the featured character, no matter how many banners pass before you pull again. That guarantee is why 180 wishes is the worst case for a character.
What is Capturing Radiance?
A mechanic added in version 5.0. When a 50/50 would be lost, Radiance can convert the loss into a win for the featured character, raising the consolidated featured probability from 50% to about 55%. Community data measures the rescue at roughly 10% of losing 50/50s. Our calculator models it exactly that way.
How many wishes for a guaranteed 5★ character?
Worst case 180 from a fresh 50/50 (two hard pities), or 90 if your next 5★ is already guaranteed. For 90% confidence you need about 155, and the 50/50-point sits near 80. The wishes-needed calculator computes your exact numbers.
How many primogems is 180 wishes?
180 × 160 = 28,800 primogems. A 160-wish weapon budget is 25,600 primogems. Daily commissions alone (60/day) take 480 days to reach 28,800 - which is why the savings planner exists.
How does the weapon banner guarantee work?
Chart a course (Epitomized Path) for one of the two featured weapons. Each 5★ that isn’t your pick grants a fate point; since version 5.0 the maximum is one, so your second 5★ is guaranteed to be the selected weapon. Worst case: 160 wishes. A single 5★ is only 37.5% to be your pick (75% featured × 50% between the two).
Do 10-pulls have better odds than single pulls?
No. Every wish uses the same rates; a 10-pull is just ten wishes bundled (with a guaranteed 4★+ inside ten wishes of the 4★ counter). Pull singles near hard pity if you like stopping the moment the 5★ lands - the math is identical.
Does the 4★ pity affect my 5★ odds?
The 4★ system (base 5.1%, guaranteed 4★+ every 10 wishes) runs alongside the 5★ counter, but a 4★ result doesn’t reset or slow your 5★ pity - only an actual 5★ does. Our simulator models both.
Are these rates official?
The base and consolidated rates are shown in-game under the Wish Details panel; the 50/50, guarantee, Radiance and fate-point rules come from HoYoverse’s official version notes. The soft-pity ramp values (start points and slopes) are community-measured from millions of exported pulls, since HoYoverse doesn’t publish the exact curve. Snapshot: October 2026.
