Capturing Radiance, explained
For four years the character banner's central drama was a literal coin flip: every 5★ was the featured character 50% of the time, and a loss only promised the next one. Version 5.0 quietly tilted the coin. Capturing Radiance (命定常驻 in the CN client) can convert a losing 50/50 into a win on the spot - you'll see a distinctive golden animation instead of the usual heartbreak - raising the official consolidated probability of the featured character from 50% to about 55%.
How it actually works
HoYoverse's official description is short: when you would lose a 50/50, Radiance may trigger and guarantee the featured character instead, with the effect that the consolidated featured probability rises to ≈55%. The community has filled in the blanks from large wish-export datasets: the rescue fires on roughly 10% of losing 50/50s (0.5 + 0.5 × 0.10 = 0.55), and - per several analyses - it seems to arm after you've recently lost a 50/50, preferentially rescuing players on loss streaks (some threads argue it only fires on the 3rd–4th consecutive loss). The official FAQ insists there are no hidden conditions beyond the base rates.
For planning purposes the distinction barely matters, and our calculator exposes both knobs: a 50/50 state (won last / lost last / guaranteed) and a Radiance toggle. The “lost last” state models the armed 50/50 you enter after taking a guaranteed pull - that's the one Radiance can rescue at 55%.
What it changes - in wishes
Radiance is comfort, not revolution. On the armed 50/50 after a loss, your odds within a 90-wish budget move from 59.4% to 63.5% in our model. The worst case is untouched: 180 wishes still guarantees a character from a fresh 50/50, because Radiance can't fire on a guarantee. Expected cost drifts down by a couple of wishes per character - nice, not life-changing.
Planning with Radiance
- Realistic mode: leave Radiance on (default) - it matches the official 55% consolidated figure.
- Conservative mode: switch it off when deciding the minimum bank needed; the guarantee math is identical either way.
- Never count on the animation: budget as if every 50/50 is 50/50; treat any rescue as a bonus wish refund.
