Genshin soft pity, explained
Genshin Impact never shows you your pity counter, yet it quietly decides when your 5★ arrives. “Soft pity” is the community name for the invisible moment the odds snap upward - and understanding it is the difference between planning around wish 76 and pointlessly hoarding for wish 90.
When does soft pity start?
On the character and standard banners, the per-wish 5★ rate leaves its 0.6% base at wish 74 and climbs by roughly 6 percentage points per wish. On the weapon banner it starts around wish 63 (community estimates span 62–65) and climbs about 7 points per wish, because the hard pity arrives earlier at 80. These values come from millions of community-exported pulls - HoYoverse publishes only the base and consolidated rates, not the curve itself.

Computed with our documented model - the same engine powers the pity calculator. Notice the cliff: at wish 74 you're 25× luckier than at wish 73.
Median 76 - not average 62, not hard pity 90
Three numbers get confused constantly. The average distance to a 5★ is 62.3 wishes - that's what the official 1.6% consolidated rate means (100 ÷ 1.6 ≈ 62.5). The median is 76: half of all 5★s arrive by then, because the soft-pity ramp bunches them into the 74–80 window. And hard pity 90 is merely the ceiling - under one pull in five ever sees it. If someone tells you “62 wishes is a 50/50 at a 5★”, they're quoting the average as if it were a coin-flip point; 62 wishes is really a 31% chance.
Soft pity on the weapon banner
Weapons ramp sooner and harder: base 0.7%, soft pity near wish 63, hard pity at 80, and the official consolidated rate is 1.85% - an average of 53 wishes per 5★. Remember the 5★ is only half the story: without a fate point it's 37.5% to be your selected weapon. With one fate point banked (v5.0+ rules), your next 5★ is your weapon, full stop.
Soft-pity myths, retired
- “10-pulls have better rates.” No - every wish rolls the same rate; the bundle only pre-pays the 4★ guarantee.
- “Pity resets when a new banner starts.” No - the counter (and your guarantee) carries between banners of the same type.
- “Stop at soft pity, it's due.” There's no due besides hard pity - each wish is its own roll; soft pity just makes those rolls progressively juicier.
- “Wishes carry between banner types.” Character, weapon and standard counters are completely separate.
